Ubuntu 14.04 does not have ffmpeg in standard repositories, but you could add ppa:mc3man/trusty-media repository and install ffmpeg package to get the needed software. For other codecs than mp3 and vorbis it converts audio to ogg. Since mp3 can't contain a video stream, to extract audio from video and covert it to mp3 it's enough to use (skip adding -vn ): ffmpeg -i myvideo.mp4 audio.mp3 FFmpeg normally audo-detects the output format from the extension you enter for the output files, so specifying the format/codec is not needed in most cases. The software can also convert other file. If MEGA Tree Session files can be converted to any other format, its likely only possible through the MEGA program mentioned above. Select Convert / Save and choose which format to convert the MTS file to. But what if the audio in the mp4 file is not one of those? you'd have to transcode anyway. You say you want to "extract audio from them (mp3 or ogg)".
